Hui (回), meaning “return” and appearing in the word huíyì (回忆, memory), is a publication that gathers undocumented stories and oral traditions from elders before they fade. The character itself, composed of two 口 (mouth) radicals, visually suggests 口口相传—the passing down of memory by word of mouth.
This project begins with my grandfather’s history as a child refugee during the Sino-Japanese War and his later life as a fighter pilot. His story, like many others, is marked by the loss of paper records through war, migration, and displacement. Hui seeks to preserve these fragile, spoken memories on paper, transforming what was once fleeting into something held, shared, and returned to.
